Digging for Artifacts

Our social studies teachers were invited to participate in a genuine archaeological dig at the site of the new HTHS stadium.  When the site preparation began on the stadium, Indian artifacts were discovered.  It  was determined that ancestral Creek Indians lived in this area.  The Creek Indian Nation requested that TCS provide an educational component to the excavation.  The University of Alabama led the archaeological dig, with David Dobbs, HTHS science teacher, coordinating with our school system’s teachers.  This was an opportunity for teachers to really experience archaeology.

Teachers were given two large areas to excavate.  The top layer had already exposed fence posts and cornerstones from the 1800’s.  They expected to hit pottery from the 1500’s to 1700’s in the first layer.  The next layer was expected to hold artifacts that are 3,000 years old.

Three teachers from PI participated in the dig - Rebekah Tomlinson, Allie Aldrich, and Kimberly Felts.  We look forward to hearing all about what real archaeologists do!

Playground Update

We have a completed playground with solid surface and fencing!  All that is left to complete is the landscaping.

Additional Teaching Units Added at Paine Intermediate

Throughout the summer, we have continued to enroll new students.  These new enrollments have caused our classrooms to swell to 27 and 28 students per class in fourth and fifth grades.  Last week we were fortunate in that we added two new teachers.  This will get class sizes for those grades down to 25 and 26.  We have been interviewing prospective teachers, and will continue until we find the perfect teachers for our students and school.

Please complete the registration process for your children if you have not done so already.  Teacher letters cannot be mailed until all components of the process are complete.  We look forward to another great school year in 2013-2014!

Fifth Grade                   Thursday, August 15       5:30 -7:00

Please join us for Meet the Teacher nights at 530 so that students can find their new classrooms and meet their teachers.  At 6:00, students will be escorted to other areas of the building. Students will be escorted back to their classrooms at 7:00 to meet up with their parents.

During the Parent Chat Night portion of the time, teachers will go over with parents all the things they normally do at Chat Night, like communication, homework, Accelerated Reader, independent reading expectations, attendance, management procedures, etc.  Teachers will collect email addresses from all parents and select a room mom.  This is the time for teachers to make sure they have modes of transportation for each student.
