Every School Day Counts

From Principal March/April 2013

A seventh grader is too tired to go to school because she stays up late playing video games.  A sixth grader convinces his mom to let him skip class because of problems with a school bully.  An eighth grader's family schedules a vacation to start two days before spring break begins.  Whatever the reason, chronic absenteeism puts a child's academic performance and high school graduation at greater risk.  Educators need to make it clear to students and parents that every day matters.

Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing at least 10 percent of school days in a given year, or about 18 days, affects the educational outcomes of nearly 7.5 million U.S. students.  Research shows that the negative effects of absenteeism begin to take hold even in the early years.  According to a report by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Social Organization of Schools, chronic absenteeism begins to rise during middle school, and continues to grow as school years progress.  As early as sixth grade, missing 18 or more days of school in a year puts a child's high school graduation at risk.  Being absent for just two days every month of the school year can allow a child to fall behind, increasing the likelihood of dropping out.

Students with regular attendance are more likely to read well by the critical third-grade milestone, score higher on standardized tests, graduate high school, and go on to college than students who are chronically absent.

Chronic absenteeism creates huge obstacles for a student's current and future success.  What our students do today will impact them for years to come.  We only have 44 school days left this year.  Let's work together to inspire and motivate our students to attend school and to work hard for the next two months.  School starts promptly at 8:00, so please have your students at school so they can be ready to learn by 8:00.

March 26 Internet Safety Meeting for Parents

Paine Intermediate School will host an Internet Safety Meeting for parents on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at 8:30 a.m.

We have seen our young students posting pictures of themselves on Instagram accounts that are wide open for anyone to view. We are also finding pictures taken of whole classrooms of students and posted on Instagram without permission from the subjects of those pictures. Sometimes the students in the pictures/videos are working in their classrooms and do not realize that a picture or video of them is being taken. Then, that picture is posted on Instagram with a mean or snide comment.

Sergeant Carl Carpenter of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, in conjunction with our school Internet Safety Committee, will address parents about measures they can take to protect their children online. Information will be shared about apps like Instagram, and how to monitor a child’s electronic devices. Children are so much more tech-savy than most of their parents! We are going to address filters and restrictions that can be placed on these devices as well.

Sergeant Carpenter expressed his appreciation at the opportunity to address parents.  He stated that he presently had six cases on his desk that were similar to the issues that we have noticed.  It is a growing problem.

Spring Break!

Paine Intermediate will be closed the week of March 18-22 for spring break.  We hope our students will enjoy resting and spending time with their families.

Class Pictures Available to Purchase Now

Our class group pictures are in and available for purchase.  You may view the Class Pictures on line at www.huskysports.photoreflect.com  (look under “Recent Photos”) or in the Paine Intermediate library.  We are very pleased with the results, and all of our students had a great time posing for these very unique keepsakes.

The class pictures serve as an important fundraiser for our school.  The cost is $10.00 for the 8x10 photos.  Checks should be made payable to Principle Portrait Group.  No purchases can be made online through the website.  Owner of The Principle Portrait Group, Scott Buttram, will donate 100% of the sales to Paine Intermediate School.  As you know, funding for schools is at an all-time low and this will allow our school to fulfill many of our student’s needs during a difficult time.

Thank you for your continued support of our teachers and students!

Paine Players Perform

On Thursday, our drama students, Paine Players, performed A Stroll Down Broadway, an original musical written by Jennifer Bruno and featuring famous Broadway tunes.  Two performances occurred during the day for Paine Intermediate students.  An evening public performance featured a packed audience.  Director and choreographer is Jennifer Bruno; musical director is Chris Byars.  Our drama club is also sponsored by Anne Owens and Ruth Ann Clay.  We are grateful for the dedication, talent, and hard work of all of our sponsors.  We appreciate our parents who supported the production with their hard work over the last few weeks.

GaTE Marketplace

Cold, wet weather did not put a damper on this year's Marketplace.  GaTE students advertised, produced, and sold various wares on Tuesday and Thursday.  From a chance to play putt-putt golf, to scarves, to popcorn to chicken wings - you name it- students sold it!  Profits will support the GaTE program with materials and supplies.
