A Snowy Night
It all began with a "light dusting." Weather forecasters should have listened to our own weather girl, Lauren Blake, who called it quite early that morning. After a whirlwind lunch on Tuesday (987 students in one hour), and a carline that lasted for hours, we had whittled our numbers down to about 60 students for a nice, hot pizza dinner. The remaining students worked on computers, played in the gym, watched a movie, had a bedtime snack, and read. By the time it was lights out, we were down to 19 students. Staff members whipped up a delicious, hot breakfast for students and staff. Later that morning, transportation was secured for getting the remaining students safely home. Jana LoPresti and Jana Feild actually rode a four-wheeler type vehicle that would go where ordinary vehicles would not travel, in order to help get students to their doors. Joy Hobbs and Kathy Bell took about a three hour tour of Trussville, delivering students home on a school bus! And throughout the entire ordeal, staying awake and watching cameras and checking on everything was Officer Bradford. He never slept for even a minute.
Things went very well, thanks to so many people who provided support. Many people stayed late into the afternoon to help with the large numbers of students. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the following people: Kristi Stacks, Chuck Bradford, Joy Hobbs, Kathy Bell, Jana LoPresti, Tom LoPresti, Jana Feild, Russ Feild, Lydia Smith, Todd Carlile, Daphne Donaldson, Nelson Young, Trussville Fire and Rescue, Deb Skinner, and Teri Hogg. A very special thank you to First Baptist Church for bringing blankets and pillows. (I now have a whole new project for us as a school. You don't realize how wonderful a warm blanket is until you are cold and trying to rest.)

An Important Message to All Parents
Dear Parents,
While observing in a math class last week, I got to see students working on a math test. It was quite a rigorous test! The students persisted and worked hard to solve the problems. The teacher whispered to me that it was the vocabulary on the test that was causing some students to have a hard time. One student did not know the meaning of the word tailgate. Others stumbled over other academic vocabulary. It was reading that was keeping those students from succeeding! At that moment, I was reminded of what we know - If we want our students to be great spellers, they should read. To be great mathematicians, our students must be great readers. To be great writers, students should read!
I am asking parents and teachers to come together to send a clarion message to our students about reading. Let us, together, speak loudly and clearly that we want and expect our students to become voracious readers. This message can't be conveyed through words alone. We must be committed to take actions that will let our children know that reading is our top priority. Every day teachers and aides take steps to encourage reading. Just recently, I have witnessed teachers taking daily status checks, asking students about their progress and recording that progress. Staff members routinely work with individual students to help them find just the right books. I am asking everyone to become proactive and put positive steps in place to encourage and excite our students about books and about reading. If we ALL make reading our top priority, our students will excel. As a parent, what do you do to encourage your child to read? Please respond to this blog and share how you are encouraging your children to become voracious readers. I look so forward to using this technology to share ideas that will help parents and our students.

That 70's Dance!
From The Alabama College and Career Ready Standards:
Students continue to develop foundational reading skills through Grades 3, 4, and 5; and reading standards for literature continue to be a major component of content instruction. Reading skill in informational text, however, is of equal importance as students understand and explain events, procedures, ideas, and concepts in historical, scientific, technical, and other texts. To build a foundation for college and career readiness, students must read widely and deeply from among a broad range of high-quality, increasingly challenging literary and informational texts.
At Paine Intermediate, teachers have been encouraging students to read a balance of fiction and nonfiction all year. We have set a goal of reading and testing on 5,000 nonfiction books during February. Teachers will post their totals each week on a hall display that we hope will keep everyone inspired to read.
If students meet that goal of 5,000 nonfiction books, we will have a school wide dance for all students on February 27. Prior to February 27, our physical education department will teach their dance unit, showing students various line dances. (There will be no couples dancing.) The theme of the dances will be "That 70's Dance." Students and staff members are invited to wear their 70's attire. It should be a lot of fun that will inspire students to read an important genre that is not the top choice of literature for many.
Dance Times:
Grade 5 9:00-10:15
Grade 4 10:45 -12:00
Grade 3 1:00-2:15

Thank You
Our GaTE field trip to Atlanta today was delayed returning when one of the buses experienced a mechanical problem. A new bus had to be secured, delaying the return by approximately two hours. I want to issue a sincere thank you to everyone who worked together to make the best of a difficult situation. I have not heard a single negative comment from anyone. I have, however, heard lots of positive comments about what a great trip it was and how well our students handled everything. We appreciate the patience and flexibility of our parents. I want to say a special thank you to our teachers - Sue Koch, Lynne Rea, Jennifer Bruno, and Jill Christopher. Many thanks to Officer Bradford and Jim Bruno for their help with traffic and pick up. We have an incredible team! Again, thank you all!
GaTE Field Trip Return Delayed
The buses transporting the GaTE students from Atlanta today have been delayed due to a mechanical problem on one of the buses. All four buses are required by the bus company to stay together until a replacement bus is secured. The replacement bus has arrived, and the caravan should be leaving their present location in West Atlanta momentarily. All students and chaperones are fine. We anticipate their arrival at Paine Intermediate to be about 8:30.

Today am observing 4th graders tackling a most rigorous math assessment about capacity, arrays, the distributive and commutative properties, and a ratio table. The students have developed the habits and strategies of persisting and thinking. They are very carefully reading and rereading (close reading) the problems, making notes, thinking about the solutions, and finally solving those rigorous problems. Amazing!

Though the school day was short, students worked hard!
Third graders are learning to read closely. They read challenging text, reread for clarification and understanding, and substantiate their answers to questions by quoting evidence from the text.
The library has had a revolving door with students coming in to find just the right books to read.
Fifth graders in Mrs. Wright's class use their Chromebooks to research the Boston Tea Party.
Third graders spent time learning their multiplication facts.

Weather Day Assignments
Assignments for today's weather day are accessible at trussville.edmodo.com. This information was sent out on Friday. Students have two weeks to complete the assignments. We do not have to make this day up by attending school on a Saturday or during Spring Break or after Memorial Day, so students are expected to complete school work today. It will take a new way of thinking, but today is not a "free day" or "play day." It is a school day at home. We can certainly look at changing this process if we can design a better one. Most students like doing their work on the computer, and they will certainly need these technology skills in the future. Therefore, we chose Edmodo as the platform for assignments. Please respond and let me know your thoughts.

E-learning Days
With winter season approaching, we would like to explain our
makeup procedures for a weather day.
Trussville City Schools received a waiver from the State Department of
Education allowing e-learning days as weather makeup days. This means your students will be responsible
for completing work online instead of coming to school. Should we be out due to weather, your
student’s teacher will send out an email with instructions on what is to be
completed. Our school uses the website: trussville.edmodo.com to facilitate
our e-learning. Your students are very
comfortable with this website and know how to navigate it. Your students will have 14 calendar days from
the date we return to complete the assignments.
Students who do not have internet access at home may use our computer
labs upon returning to school. These
labs are open from 7:30-8:00 am each morning.
Our teachers will work with these students to ensure that the work is
completed. Our e-learning lessons will
consist of Dreambox, written math problems, daily reading and comprehension
work.
We believe this is the best approach for our students and
staff to makeup weather days. If you
have any questions about the information provided please contact your student’s
teacher.
Made Me Smile January 3
Third graders in Mrs. Childs' classroom used mini iPads to research the weather in Boston, New York, and Portland, Maine, and to compare their temperatures with ours in Alabama. Students are charting the temperatures over time. This lesson uses technology to assist in integrating math, science, and reading.
Safety Patrol Information
Temperatures in our area are expected to drop
into the teens and possibly even single digits next week. We want to make
sure our safety patrollers are prepared for the extremely cold weather.
Please make sure your child wears warm clothing to serve on safety patrol if he
or she is stationed at an outside post. This includes a heavy coat,
gloves, and hat, toboggan, or hood. Students may also wish to wear a
scarf and possibly even thermals underneath their clothing. If you prefer
that your child not serve on safety patrol next week, we certainly
understand. Please call or e-mail Mrs. Blake and let her know so she can
make the necessary adjustments to our outside posts.
