ACT Aspire New State Assessment

The State Department of Education recently adopted ACT Aspire to assess all students in Alabama in grades 3-8.  ACT Aspire takes the place of the Alabama Reading and Math Test, which has been administered to our students each spring for the last several years. Our students will take three separate tests on three days.  The tests take an hour or less, so interruptions in the instructional day will be minimal.  It will be important for all students to attend school on these days.

Tuesday, May 6 - Math (1 hour)
Wednesday, May 7 - Reading (1 hour)
Thursday, May 8 - Writing (30 minutes)

We have the option of taking the tests electronically or with paper and pencil.  We decided, as a system, to use the paper and pencil tests.  The test is standardized, so test administrators (teachers) receive the same training; all students have the same testing conditions, and all students have the same amount of time for the test.

ACT Aspire provides longitudinal assessment data for student growth modeling from elementary grades to high school.  The tests are aligned to Alabama College and Career Ready Standards.  Students can be monitored to determine if they are on track for college and career readiness.  Schools will receive school and individual student data during the summer.  Parents will receive ACT Aspire results in August or September.

Fifth graders will also take the Alabama Science Assessment on April 29.  This assessment has been given to fifth and seventh graders for the last several years.
